Our Mission
Our mission is to deliver a co-operative library infrastructure which makes best use of available resources for the benefit of all learners and researchers in Scotland. SCURL drives innovation and efficient service development across Scotland’s academic and research libraries through collaboration.
The current membership of SCURL comprises all Scottish university and HEI libraries, the two major public reference libraries in Glasgow and Edinburgh, the National Library of Scotland, National Museums Scotland, the Open University and the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.
A representative of the Scottish Library and Information Council (SLIC) attends meetings.
SCURL has been working collaboratively across academic and research libraries for more than 30 years.
All Higher Education Institutions in Scotland are members of SCURL, as well as the major public libraries and specialist research libraries.
Through SHEDL deals, SCURL member libraries have access to content subscriptions worth £11 M.
SCURL coordinates projects across our member libraries in order to develop innovative services, sharing resources and expertise so that all members benefit from working at national-scale.
SCURL is currently scoping the development of an Open Access publishing platform to be operated by Scottish university libraries.
The Last Scottish Copy Policy was developed to support collaborative collection management across Scotland’s academic and research libraries. In January 2022 SCURL launched guidance to support the application of the policy across member libraries.
