The major £6m library building refurbishment programme has commenced and the programme will run continuously throughout the next two years consisting of five phases with each phase upgrading part of one or more floors simultaneously. Library stock will be rationalised to free up floor space for enhanced group study facilities, and completely renewing plant, furniture and fixtures.

The rebuilding of the Mackintosh Library carries on apace and the space will reopen in 2019. A prototype replica of one of the library bays is under construction to be shortly followed by a prototype replica of the chairs.

The Academic Liaison team are moving to a new space within the Library branded as the library Ask and Learn space. It utilises the mezzanine floor on Level 1  and the space includes 4 consultation pods at which the team will carry out appointments, drop-ins, and a teaching/seminar room accommodating 20 people.

Abertay University has embarked on Phase 1 of £4.5m refurbishment project encompassing all floors of the Library with a completion date of August 2017. Phase 2 will be completed in summer 2018.

Glasgow Caledonian University has restructured within the Library to merge two existing teams to form a new Collections and Discovery team. Responsibilities for:

  • Acquisition, description, management, discoverability & accessibility of library electronic resources and physical collections
  • Management of the University research outputs repository and educational resources repository and support for the Open Access research agenda
  • Management, development and support of libray systems and services.


Stirling University Library has signed a contract with Innovative to upgrade the library management system to Sierra. It is anticipated that migration and go-live will be completed by August 2016.


Edinburgh University Library has received funding to digitise all their Ph.D. theses. This is the first part of the plan to put significant investment in to the digitisation of collections and associated activities.


The SRUC announced Professor Wayne Powell has been appointed as Principal from July 2016. Formerly the Chief Science Office at CGIAR in Montpelier, France, and also previously Director of the National Institute of Agricultural Botany in Cambridge and Deputy Director of the former Scottish Cop Institute which is now part of the James Hutton Institute.


The Whittaker Library of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland was awarded their 3rd IAML (International Association of Music Libraries) Excellence Award, with particular commendations for their strong collection, highly qualified staff, and the marketing of services & resources through social media (@WhittakerLib)  and the Whittaker Live! blog.

Many of the Mackintosh-designed light fittings, which were suspended from the ceiling of the Library, have survived as around 600 fragments. With the help of HES and the University of Glasgow, the exact metallurgical composition, surface finishes, strength and capability are being assessed for repair and re-use. The ambition is to reassemble those fragments and rehang.

Ten new galleries opened in July 2016 showcasing the best of the collections from decorative art, design, fashion, science and technology.
