SCURL

SHERAL: SCOTTISH HIGHER EDUCATION & RESEARCH ACQUISITIONS LIBRARIANS

Origins/History

The group started in 1990 as SUAL (Scottish Universities Acquisitions Librarians). Membership initially included the older universities only, but the group expanded in 1992 to include the newer Scottish universities. Membership broadened out further and the group is now open to all members of SCURL and includes the National Library of Scotland, Edinburgh City Libraries, the Mitchell Library and other SFC-funded higher education institutions. SHERAL has now become a specialist group of SCURL.

The group meets twice annually and each institution may be represented by the Serials and Acquisitions Librarian. SHERAL provides a forum where topics relevant to serials and acquisitions departments can be discussed, for example, recent discussions have resulted in SHERAL members and suppliers signing major consortium purchasing contracts (serials and monographs) which have been beneficial to the institutions involved in terms of financial and service level agreements. SHERAL members have also undertaken to monitor consortium suppliers' services to ensure that the Contract terms are adhered to.
