Modern printed collections

The Library's collection supports teaching and research in Archaeology specifically North Atlantic archaeology, post-medieval historical archaeology and primitive settlement in Central America; Celtic specifically Gaelic of Nova Scotia; History specifically the history of society and culture in North America from first contact to the present, Canadian Arctic exploration, Scottish contacts with North America including migration c. 1770-1860, industrialisation and change since 1500, the American Civil War, the American Revolution; Economic and scoial history specifically transport and urban history of the United States since 1890; Politics specifically the Presidency, political institutions and popular culture, foreign relations; Theology and religious studies specifically Fundamentalism and modern church history in the USA since 1800, the history of reformed worship in the USA, modern theology and urban congregational studies in the USA, Social sciences specifically women's studies; Literature specifically American literature in the 19th and 20th centuries, French Canadian literature; Theatre specifically American theatre from 1915; Film and TV Studies specifically silent cinema; Hollywood cinema, postmodernism and cinema 1970s and 1980s; Fine Art specifically American art and criticism, James McNeill Whistler and Music, specifically 20th century music.

Research supported by current (selective) stock development policies include: the history of: Scottish contacts with North America with particular emphasis on the 17th -19th centuries; North American and the United States from the 18th century; the American West; race and slavery in Colonial America and the United States; United States foreign relations particularly with Britain, 1917-1989 and The Cold War 1943-1991; the economic and social history of the United States in the twentieth century with particular reference to technology, advertising and the consumer society.

The strengths of the Library's historical North American*** collections are as follows. The Canadian collection covers description and travel*, economic conditions, emigration and immigration, foreign relations, history, politics and government. The United States collection covers armed forces*, biography, Central Intelligence Agency, Christianity or church history*, the Civil War 1861-1865*, civilization, the colonial period*, commerce and commercial policy*, confederation 1783-1789, Congress, constitutional history and law*, description and travel*, discovery and exploration, economic conditions and policy**, emigration and immigration, ethnic minorities, Federal Bureau Of Investigation, foreign relations***, the French and Indian war 1755 1763, history**, intellectual life, literature, military policy*, national security, Native Americans**, politics and government***, population, race relations*, religion, revolution 1775-1783*, rural conditions, social conditions or customs or life or policy**, the Spanish-American war 1898, statistics, the Supreme Court*, territorial expansion, the war with England 1812, the war with Mexico 1845-48.

Early printed material & special collections (incl. music)

Centre for Whistler Studies

The Centre is the primary focus in the University for scholarship on the artist James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903) and his circle. The major current research programme is an edition of the 10,000 letters in the Whistler correspondence. http://www2.arts.gla.ac.uk/Whistler/html/papers.htm The Centre collaborates with other University departments with research interests in Whistler. These include the Hunterian Art Gallery, which houses 1,000 works of art by Whistler, the Department of History of Art, the French Department and the Centre for American Studies. The Centre is located in Glasgow University Library, the repository for the Whistler collection of letters, papers, books and photographs, and is a constituent member of the University's Institute for Art History. The Centre works closely with a number of galleries and museums in the United States with research interests in Whistler. These include the Freer Gallery of Art in Washington DC, which holds the most extensive collection of Whistler's work in North America, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Delaware Art Museum in Wilmington, DE, and the Whistler House Museum in Lowell, MA.
