The University Library aims to purchase materials to support teaching and research undertaken both specifically as part of the American Studies programme and also, where appropriate, as part of the teaching and research undertaken within the participating departments.

There are collections of papers and photographs from shipbuilding companies, sailmaking companies and engineering firms all with correspondence and accounts relating to US business transactions. The collection also contains manuscripts relating to business and trade/dealings with Canadian companies. These include company accounts, correspondence and technical specifications. In addition there are personal collections including the correspondence and papers of John Buchan 1st Baron Tweedsmuir and John Buchan 2nd Baron Tweedsmuir and further substantial collections of family papers some of which incorporate genealogical notes.
